If you are searching for another excuse to hit the links, you may be interested to hear about the various health benefits of golf. Studies have shown that participating in golf has physical, social and mental advantages. Playing 9 holes of golf can burn up to 800 calories (riding a golf cart) and up to 1500 calories (walking and carrying a 20-pound golf bag) for an average size person. Researchers in Finland looked at 25 male and female golfers aged 65 and older and found that an 18-hole round of golf had a greater effect on lipid and blood glucose levels than 3.5 miles of regular walking or Nordic walking (cbsnews.com). Golf, being a social activity, can provide a mental and emotional boost as well as a great (and fun) way to manage stress.
